In January 1999, my husband
and I made the decision for me to stop working outside the home, take our
daughter out of school, and teach her at home. Up until that time she had
attended a private Christian school, which worked out really well for the
first four years, but as the school began to grow, the administration became
more concerned with making the school building larger than they were with
providing a quality Christian education for the children already there.
It seems that homeschooling
is a very debatable subject these days, but for us we only had two choices
private school or homeschooling, because we never considered the public
school system as an option. There are several reasons we felt that way:
In the public schools God is not mentioned, There is too much violence
in public schools, There is no stress placed on moral values, and The quality
of education is not up to par.
My husband and I have
been congratulated and condemned for choosing to homeschool, but I feel
we made the decision that God wanted us to make, our daughter is taught
about God, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost, she is taught the
basic subjects: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Spelling,
and Reading, and she is also taught a variety of other subjects including
Fine Arts, Foreign Language, and Computer Skills. We also take field trips,
and do activities, and projects.
The best part is that
all of this is taught at home at a pace she is comfortable with, and in
a safe environment. Homeschooling has been a huge blessing, and a very
rewarding experience. I get to spend more quality time with my daughter
one on one, she is more relaxed now and has a whole new attitude about
learning. She still has plenty of contact with children her own age at
the church we attend, and with children of our friends.
Homeschooling was the
best decision our family could make concerning our daughters education.
